The Town of Winterville has been selected to receive a grant from the N.C. Parks & Recreation Trust Fund (NC PARTF) in the amount of $500,000 to develop Phase I of the Winterville Recreation Park Expansion. Winterville Recreation Park is one of two parks operated by the Town of Winterville. The Town recently purchased 4 additional acres adjacent to Winterville Recreation Park in 2007 and this grant will enable the Town to begin construction of Phase I in January 2009. The award was announced at the May 16th meeting of the NC PARTF Authority, an eleven-member board appointed jointly by the governor and the state legislature to oversee the grant program.
There were 89 grant applications submitted from communities across the state requesting more than $33 million dollars for park land acquisition and development. Winterville was one of 34 applications selected in this funding cycle. A total of $12,714,809 million dollars was awarded in this round and an additional $4 million is expected to be awarded among the remaining applicants when the Authority meets again in July.
This is the first NC PARTF grant awarded for the Town of Winterville. Phase I of the project will cost an estimated $1,918,493 of which $500,000 will come from NC PARTF. Winterville’s portions of costs for the project are estimated to be $1,418,493 with some of that money coming from recreation subdivision fees.
When fully developed, Winterville Recreation Park will have 4 lighted baseball/softball fields, soccer / football field, two tennis courts, bleacher seating, dugouts, about 3/4 miles of walking trail, amphitheatre, playground area, parking for more than 265 cars, and multiple concessions and restrooms.
