Select Menus Page

Linking to Other Web Sites

The "Select Menus" page is used to control your menus in a number of different ways and is also the page where you can add links that will be displayed as part of your menu structure. From the "Edit" menu, select "Select Menus" to bring up the select menus page. At the top of the page is an "Update Menus" button followed by 3 checkboxes and then the current menu structure. Click on the "add new link" checkbox to bring up the "Link Title" and "Link" textboxes. In the following example I'm creating a link to Rteamsite.com. I enter the title that I want displayed in the menu in the "Link Title" textbox and then the actual link URL in the "Link" textbox.

Then click on the "Add New Link" button to add the link to your menu structure.

After adding the link you will see it displayed at the bottom of your current menu structure. In this case the Stats folder is the last top level menu item, so by default the link will show up under the Stats menu item when you update your menus.

If you would like to move the menu item or have it displayed under its own menu item, read the next FAQ.

What's a Top Level Menu?

Top level menu items are displayed along the top of your menus and are always visible. Sub level menu items are visible only when a user places their mouse over the top level menu item that the sub menu belongs to. In the following example "Team" and "Stats" are both top level menu items, while "Stat Definitions" and the items below are sub level menu items.

Moving Menu Items Around

When custom pages, links, or top level menus are added to your menu structure, they are by default placed at the bottom of your menu structure. The up and down arrows (circled in green below) and the left and right arrows (circled in red below) under the "Move" column provide you a way to move your menu items around. The left and right arrows allow you to make a menu item a top level menu item or a sub level menu item. ( See next FAQ for an explanation about top and sub level menu items. ) The up and down arrows allow you to move the menu items above or below other menu items.

Warning: Keep your top level menu item titles short and try to add them only if needed. Too long and/or too many will affect how your site will look.

In the previous example I added a link to my menus (rteamsite.com), if I plan on adding a number of links I might want to add a top level menu item to hold all my links. The top level menu checkbox will allow me to add a top level menu item that doesn't link to anything. It's used to group menu items. To add a top level menu item: From the "Select Menus" page click on the "Add Top Level Menu" checkbox. This will display a single textbox where you enter your top level menu item. Below I have entered "Links" as the menu place holder.

Now I can place all my links under this new top level menu item

I updated my menus, why don't I see the changes on my site?

There are normally only two reasons why you won't see the changes. You must click on the "Update Menus" button after you have completed your modifications on the page. You only need to do this once at the end of making one or multiple changes on this page. The other reason for menus not showing up is that browsers will "cache" web page contents in order to serve up the page faster the next time you visit. If the menus have been cached they won't show up for you right away even though they have been modified. To see the changes you will need to clear your browser cache and refresh your page.
