Spartans Down Eastlake in Season Opener
Last season Jason Wilkens and Todd Smith accounted for more than 50% of the Spartan scoring.  How the Spartans would respond this season with the loss of those two senior stars was the question that seemed to get answered on Friday.  Matt Downs led all scorers with 22 and Chandler Ellis followed closely with 21.  Although those two players accounted for a large portion of the Spartan scoring, the offense seemed to be much more of a team effort as the Spartans passed the ball effectively and showed great patience in the half court.

Although they showed patience in the half court, a bulk of their scoring came on fast break points as time and time again the Spartans quickly passed the ball down court after a basket or defensive rebound.  With a young athletic team an emphasis has been placed on using that speed and athletic ability.  It worked to perfection as Eastlake time and time again couldn't get back quick enough on defense to stop the streaking Spartans.

It was an exciting game for the home crowd that didn't know what to expect.  You could see the confidence grow with each minute as the Spartans dominated the game from midway through the first half until the final whistle blew.  This was a great non-conference win against an Eastlake team that finished second in their conference last year and is expected to compete for the title again this season.

Hopefully this is a preview of what looks to be an exciting season for the Spartans.
