Milleteers were clutch, Rebels were not. The game could be summed up with that one statement with two very distinct turning points in the game as the Rebels and Milleteers battled to the lowest scoring game in the PBL so far in 2011.
RHP Corey Epp (1-1) was sent to the hill for the Rebels to take on RHP Ryan Walker from the Milleteers. Epp pitched extrememly well getting ground balls when the they were needed and holding the Millteers off the scoreboard until the third inning. With one out and one on, CF Kevin Doyle hit a ground ball that should have been one out for sure, maybe two on a quick 4-6-1 turn. A bad hop and a late throw later the Milleteers found them selves with runners at first and second with one out as opposed to two out. Next batter was 1B Steven Pahl who lined out to LF Dustin Solberg which should have ended the inning. Unfortunately for Epp C Shane Gerein was able to connect on a 2-2 hanging curveball that was driven over the head of RF Kevin Reinholt to cash in 3B Trevor Pahl and Doyle to give the Milleteers a 2-1 lead. With Gerein advancing to third base on the throw to home and error at the plate, SS Jon Antsey connected with a single padding the lead to 3-1 Milleteers. A lead the would not give up.
On the offensive side, the Rebels only run came on a one out double to the left field corner by CF Kris Kushnerick, cashing in Kevin Reinholt who reached via error to Antsey. The Rebels managed 7 hits in the game but were unable to come up with the timely and clutch hit as 10 runners were left stranded on the base paths, 6 of which were in scoring position. The night was summed up offensively for the Rebels in the third inning when with the bases loaded and one out, Walker was able to wiggle out of trouble getting Kevin Reinholt to pop out to the short stop and Kushneric to line out to the left fielder. With only a one run lead heading into the thrid versus a two or more run lead, the Milleteers were able to capitalize with three in the home half.
With a six day break now between games for the Rebels, the team can reflect on two mediocre offensive games versus the Camrose Roadrunners and the Milleteers and try to get the bats going next week as they take on the Armena Royals in Ryley on Tuesday and the Roadrunners once again on Thursday at Harry Andreassen Field in Camrose.
First pitch for both games is scheduled for 7:00pm.
