The Ryley Rebels were able to defeat the Camrose Roadrunner 5-3 on Tuesday night in Ryley in the closest game of the young season for the Rebels.
Coming off the 18-5 victory of the Holden Blue Jays last Thursday, the Rebels bats grew a little cold versus veteran RHP Josh Banack as he held the Rebels to only 8 hits over 6.00 innings. It was not for a lack of trying by the Rebels as the offence only walked once and only struck out once. The Rebels continued to hit the ball hard, just right at the Roadrunner defence. The Roadrunner left fielder made three defensive gems catching three hard line drives, one by 1B Kyle Reinholt and two by P Kris Kushnerick. All three catches prevented sure extra bases by the Rebels.
Of the 8 hits by the Rebels 5 were for extra bases. Kyle Reinholt had an opposite field double, SS Corey Epp and 2B Brian Tavaroli had back to back RBI doubles in the third with RF Travis Jones driving in a run with his fourth inning double. The extra base parade ended when C Dustin Solberg ripped an opposite field triple down into the left field corner giving Solberg 2 triples in as many games.
Both Epp and CF Josh Lyons recorded multi-hit games (2 each) with Epp and Tavaroli also collecting mult-RBI games (2 a piece).
The defence was strong once again for the Rebels as two double plays were turned and only one error was made (pick off throw to first base by Kushnerick in the sixth inning which led to two Roadrunner runs). RHP Kris Kushnerick was given the start for the Rebels, his first of the season. Kushnerick allowed only 3 hits through 5.67 innings but walked 6 batters (back to back walks in the first and fifth inning and two walks to Roadrunners 3B Pam MacTavish). RHP Curt Stensrud came into the game in the sixth to earn the 4 out save for his first save of the season. The win by Kushnerick marks the first Rebels starter to complete 5.00 innings to earn a win in 2011.
The Rebels will now take the 3-0 record into Leduc to take on the Milleteers on Wednesday night. The Rebels have had next to no luck versus the Milleteers since the start of the 2009 season posting an overall record of 3-13 versus the back to back PBL Champion Milleteers. The 3-0 start by the Rebels is a complete 180 from the usual 0 for start that the team has been accustomed to for the last two seasons. In both 2009 and 2010 the team started the PBL season 0-3 before ending the streaks by beating the Tofield Lakers in each of the two seasons. The Rebels also look to continue their winning ways on the road as the team finished 6-1 on the road in 2010 and are currently 1-0 in 2011.
First pitch at Leduc Reservoir Field is scheduled for 7:00pm
