Rebels Clinch Third with a Huge..........Tie?

You read it right folks. The Ryley Rebels clinched third place in there first season back in the Powerline Baseball League with a tie.

But it wasn't just any tie. It was an 11 inning marathon against the Bardo Athletics that saw both starting pitchers, Curt Stensrud for the Rebels and Don Oslund for the Athletics, throw a complete game. That's right, 11 innings of baseball from each pitcher. "Neither one of these guys are going to be able to throw for a month" said OF Corey Epp.

Ryley was able to strike first in the 4th inning when Corey Epp was able to come all the way around from first when Oslund over threw 1B Ryan Stauffer on 3B Shane Metrunic's slow come backer. "Corey looked like he was running as hard as he could, but his speed was closer to jogging the sprinting when he got to third" said OF Kris Kushnerick. Out of breath and being congratulated by his teammates Epp was able to mutter "There's too much running in baseball". Heart of a lion Corey, heart of a lion.

Bardo was able to tie the game up in the bottom of the 7th when OF Pete Neufeld was able to score on a sacrifce fly by P Don Oslund. Neufled had reached on one of 6 walks from Rebels starter Curt Stensrud.

The Rebels had their best chance to put away the game in the 11th inning when SS Dylan Solberg lead off inning with a stand up double and DH Kyle Reinholt (19 RBI's) and OF Kris Kushnerick (14 RBI's) coming to bat. Oslund was able to get Reinholt swinging but Kushnerick was able to get Oslund with a hard single to left field that moved Solberg to third. OF Josh Lyons was up next and laid down a perfect squeeze bunt as Solberg was two thirds of the way home and Bardo was dead in the water. But, the ball rolled foul, barely. Lyons was able to smack an opposite field line drive shot to RF where Pete Neufeld appeared out of nowhere and was able to gun down Solberg who was tagging on the fly.

It was a great game for both teams, the fans and the league.

Next up for the Rebels remains to be seen as they would either face the Leduc Milleteers or the Camrose Roadrunners in the first round of the 2009 PBL Playoffs. Bardo is set to square off againts the Armena Royals Tuesday night in Bardo where a Bardo win would eliminate the Royals and clinch 4th place for the Athletics. A lose would leave Bardo's fate in the hands of the Armena Royals vs. Tofield Lakers game happening on a date to be determined.
