The Thunder gathered at Howell field Tuesday night for the last game of the season against the Warren County Shockers with whom they had split the previous two games. The Thunder had 6th place secured and the Shockers were looking at anywhere in between and including 2nd through 5th place. They would have to settle for 5th as the Thunder won the close contest 9 to 8 behind some great pitching by John Connell and Greg Moss (winning pitcher, 2-1) as they allowed only 3 earned runs in 7 innings combined.
Outstanding Performers:
Lance Berner     2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBIs
Evan Koogler    2 for 3, 3B, 2B, 2 RBIs

After a tough loss the first time we faced the Cardinals, the Thunder took no chances, and got out to an early lead in the first as Lee Jury singled and scored on a triple to the right center field wall by Andrew Verrett. After Berner popped up to the shortstop, Drew York slugged his 8th Homerun of the season (we still haven’t found the ball), a 2 run shot to left-center that scored Verrett. The next 5 batters hit reached base safely and the thunder scored 4 more runs the first inning. Matt Walters started the game with a 7 run lead to work with but he didn’t need it. Matt pitched three no hit innings and struckout 8 of 10 batters faced. Meanwhile, the Thunder continued to add runs with 2 in the 2nd inning as York walked, Koogler got hit by the pitch, and Hobbs singled to load the bases. Walters came up and hit a ground ball to short but beat out the doubleplay with no throw as the shortstop stumbled at second base. Koogler took advantage and snuck home on the play giving Walters two RBIs. In the third, the Thunder scored another when Drew Bost doubled and advanced to 3rd on a pass ball. Verrett blooped a single to center, and scored Bost from 3rd. Walters walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 3rd, and then struck out the next 2 batters. The final out of the third came on a fly ball to right field.
In the 4th, the Thunder added a run as Koogler and Hobbs both singled. Walters hit into a fielders choice and Bost got another RBI single. Bost came in to pitch the 4th inning, and retired the side without more than a double to centerfield, striking out the 4th batter of the inning. The top of the 5th brought 2 more runs for the Thunder as we continued to hit the ball well. Bost pitched the 5th, but ran in to trouble as the Cardinals scored 3 runs despite not getting a hit due to throwing errors. Finishing the sixth inning proved to be problematic for Bost, and James Hammock came in to relieve him to get the last 2 outs of the 6th. Hammock continued and finished the game giving up just 3 hits in 2 and 2/3rd innings and allowing only one run to score. The Thunder bats took a break in the 6th, but they came back in the 7th to plate two runs on a leadoff double by Greg Moss, a walk by Verrett and RBI singles by Berner and Ramsey. Chris Heaton lead off the 8th inning with a double and eventually scored on a single by Greg Moss to make it 16 to 10 Thunder as the Cardinals came up to bat in the bottom of the 8th. Hammock made it a quick inning despite the leadoff single by getting the 2nd batter to ground into a doubleplay, walking a batter and then finishing it with a ground out to third base. The Thunder Wins,,,,The Thunder Wins!!!!!!
Outstanding Performers:

The bombs were flying Tuesday night as the Rangers and Thunder combined for 7 homeruns at Rotary Park. Ramsey started on the hill, and immediately gave up a homerun on the second pitch of the game, but bore down and put out the next 3 batters on a pop fly and two K’s. The Thunder offense plated 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st as Jury and Verrett singled, and Berner hit his first homerun of the season, a 3 run shot off the top of the fence in right field. The Rangers came back with 2 unanswered runs in the 2nd to make it 4-3 after 2. The Rangers continued with another 2 runs in the third on a 2 run homerun, and the Thunder answered with only one run, a solo homerun by Drew York (5th on the year). The Rangers blasted 3 unanswered runs in the 4th on back-to-back homeruns as the ball continued to carry out of the big park making the score 8 to 5 after 4. The Thunder failed to produce runs the next 2 innings and the Rangers scored 2 unearned runs, one in the 5th and one in the 6th. With the score 10 to 5 in the top of the 7th, Drew Bost came out of the bullpen and walked a couple, but gave up no hits and no runs to set the stage for a Thunder comeback! Bost helped himself by drawing a walk with one out, but Jury went down swinging for the second out. Verrett and Berner took advantage of the Ranger pitcher’s loss of control and each walked to load the bases up for York. With nowhere to put York, the Rangers decided to roll the dice, and lost that bet as York hit a grand salami high and far over the left field fence to make it 10-9 Rangers. The Thunder didn’t stop there, Koogler and Hammock both singled to bring the tying run to second base! However, the next batter went down swinging to end the game just short of victory for the Thunder.

Congrats to:
Drew York    4 for 4, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 2 SB
Lance Berner 1 for 3, HR, 3 RBIs, BB

Back on the 27th of June the second game of a Rangers-Thunder doubleheader ended in a stalemate with 12 runs a piece as time ran out at West Carrollton. The tie game was continued starting with the top of the 8th with both teams at the top of their order. Drew Bost continued on the mound from the second game and gave up a triple off the center field fence to the lead-off batter. The throw home was redirected back at third and over thrown to allow the runner to score. The next batter walked, but Drew got the next 3 batters out all on fly balls. The Thunder had the top of the order and only 2 runs required for the win. However the first two batters grounded out, but Koogler tripled on a well hit ball to dead center to bring Drew York up to the plate. The Rangers pitched around York for three and then went with the intentional walk to put the winning run on first. Sparks came up to bat and almost put the ball through the infield but a great play by the first basemen ended the game as the Thunder again fell short by a run, losing 13-12.

 Outstanding Offense:
Evan Koogler    4 for 5, 3B, 2 SB, 5 RBIs
Lee Jury            3 for 5, 2B, 3 Runs, RBI
Matt Walters     3 for 4, 1 Run

The Thunder and the Indians banged heads again making up the second game of the previously rained out doubleheader from back in June. Ramsey started the game for the Thunder (hey it worked last time) and went another 4 hard innings as the Indians hit the ball well. This time the Thunder jumped out to take the lead early scoring 2 runs in the first with none from the opposition. However, the tables turned in the 2nd inning as the Indians got unanswered runs on a 3 run homer over the left field fence. But the Thunder came back in the third on a walk, couple hits, and David Moss’s hustle around the bases manufactured a run as the last two Thunder bats K’d that inning. Tied 5 to 5 after 4 innings Ramsey continued the fifth inning, but after giving up a second HR to Spradlin on a hanging Knuckleball, Greg Moss came in and finished out the game. Although the Indians scored 5 in the 5th, the Thunder never gave up and regained the lead on a 7 run rally in the Bottom of the 5th as the whole lineup contributed. The Thunder tacked on 3 more insurance runs in the 6th as York crushed the ball for a monster 3-run HR (brand new baseball + York + bat = egg ball). Greg continued to pitch well, pitching two scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th picking up the win for the Thunder!

Notable Offenders:
Drew York                                2 for 4, 2B, HR, 4 RBIs
David Moss                               2 for 4, 2B, 3 runs, RBI
Lee “Grass Hopper” Jury           2 for 4, 2 runs

The Thunder and the Indians finally got together to make up the first game of a rained out doubleheader from back in June. Ramsey started the game for the Thunder and went a 4 hard innings as the Indians hit the ball well. The situation looked kind of dark in the fifth as the Thunder was down 9 to 5 (not to mention the lights weren’t on yet ‘cause the field custodian probably got mugged on his way to turn them on), but the Thunder managed to get 3 runs on a series of passed balls and walks. With the score 9 to 8 Indians and the lights on, James Hammock came in to pitch the 5th, but couldn’t find the strike zone and gave up 3 runs on no hits. Down by only 2 runs (12-10), Coach Ramsey called upon the secret weapon, Drew York, to shut the Indians down in the sixth. With no outs and 2 runners on, Drew came in throwing peas and dropping deuces off the table to bail the Thunder out of the jam. Then, the Thunder rallied big in the 7th inning to come from behind and take the lead for the first time in the game 16 to 12. Drew continued to scalp the Indians in the 7th, and despite giving up a run on a walk and double, He struck out the side for the Thunder win!

Notable Offense:
Lee “Grass Hopper” Jury               4 for 5, 3 runs, 2B, 2 SB, 2 RBIs
Chris Heaton                                 2 for 2, 2 runs, 2 BB
Clint Sparks                                  2 for 3, 2 runs, 2B, SB

The Thunder Loses to the Cardinals 9 to 2 - Rain Cuts Game After 5

Greg Moss started for the Thunder, and took the loss as only Clint Sparks and Lee Jury produce a runs each making the final 9 to 2 Cards in a five inning game shorten by the rain.
The next game is a double header at Northmont versus the Astros on Sunday, 25 July.

Thunder 2 0 2 0 4 0 -     8 8 2

Drew Bost started the first game on the hill for the Thunder, but had some unfortunate luck, and some control problems.  Coach Ramseys perhaps pulled him out too late or too soon as Bost loaded the bases in the third to have Connell, the left-handed lobber, come in to pitch.  The change in velocity and good ball movement was not enough to keep the runs off the board as the Dragons singled a run in and then hit a grand slam two batters later to plate 5 runs for an 8 to 1 lead after 3 innings.  The Thunder made a come back in the 6th and 7th innings, but fell short losing it 8 to 6.  Evan Koogler came in to pitch the last two innings allowing no runs and only 1 hit while striking out 2 batters.
Notable Offense:
Lance Berner 3 for 4, ROE, 2 doubles, 1 run, 1 RBI
Andrew Verrett 2 for 3, 2B, 1 run.
Greg Moss 2 for 3, 2 runs

The Thunder wins the second game of the double header 8 to 2 as Walters and Ramsey combine to allow only 2 runs over 7 innings.  The Thunder offense was fired up from the start, with 2 runs in the first, and third innings and 4 in the 4th.
Notable Offense:
Drew York 2 for 3, BB, HR, 2B, 2 runs, 2 RBIs
David Moss 3 for 4, 2 doubles, 2 runs, 1 RBI

The Thunder try to come from behind again to get the win against the Rangers, but leave business unfinished after a 7 inning stalemate.  Again, the Rangers got out to an early lead with lots of hits and a dinger, but the Thunder stayed with them keeping it close and eventually tying it up in the 6th inning with a 5 run rally. James Hammock started on the hill and pitched 5 good innings against the offensive power house.  With the score 11-7 in favor of the Rangers, John Ramsey pitched the fifth inning, the knuckle ball was workinmg well, and he held the Rangers offense to just 1 run over the last 3 innings to allow the Thunder to catchup and tie the game.
Notable Thunder Offense:
Koogler 3 for 4, 4 RBIs, 2 SB
Jury 3 for 4, 3 RBIs, 3 Runs
Hobbs 4 for 4, 2 runs
Walters 3 for 3, 1 run

Ramsey 2 for 2, 3 RBIs, 2 Runs

John Ramsey came in out of the bullpen to start to 8th inning and got a quick flyout to center. Then gave up a basehit to left that was followed by 3 errors that allowed the Royals to score 3 unanswered runs and win the game 4-1.

The Thunder's Doubleheader with the Indians Gets Rained Out

Too much rain came down the night before and left the field at Northwestern too wet to play on.  The games will likely be rescheduled as two weeknight games in July or August.

The Game with the Astros is rained out due to poor field conditions

The early morning thunderstorms flooded the field at Northmont and at 9:00AM there were large bodies of water at first and third.  Despite the dry and sunny weather during the day, and the use of a Shop Vac by the Astros coach, the water had done the damage and left firstbase a mud hole.  The Thunder will now play a DH against the Astros on July 25th to make this game up.

The Thunder joins Roy Hobbs League for some non-league baseball action

Sunday, 6 June 2010, the Thunder will have it's first ever wood bat game against one of the top teams from the Dayton Roy Hobbs Baseball League, the Dayton Braves.  The game is set to start at 11AM on the Franklin High School field weather permitting.  John Connell is scheduled to make his pitching debut and mow down some wood bats.  Following this game, the Thunder will head up north to Northmont HS to play the Dayton Astros at 4PM.

The Thunder forgot their bats at home Tuesday night and could only manage two hits as the Sox pitching struck out 14 in 7 innings. Meanwhile walks, some errors and 10 hits fueled the Sox to a 12 to 0 win over the previously undefeated Thunder.  James Hammock started and pitched well, but the Sox took advantage of a bit of a fielding fiasco in the third and plated 7 runs (only 2 earned).  Hammock pulled himself out in the fourth after the first two batters singled. David Moss came in with a vengence and pitched 3 solid innings striking out 6 and only allowing 2 runs.  The Thunder's winning streak stops at 6, but they'll be back on the 6th of June to take on the Stros at Northmont starting at 4:00PM.

The Thunder comeback in the 9th inning scoring 2 to tie it, and a walk off RBI single for the win after trailing most of the game. Matt Walters started on the hill with 3 no hit innings, but then in the 4th, an error at first prompted a series of hits and 3 run inning for the Dragons.  Matt pitched really well through 6 innings allowing 6 unearned runs, but struck out 11 batters.  With the score 6 to 2, John Ramsey came in to pitch the seventh.  John pitched 3 scoreless innings despite loading the bases in the 8th with no outs on two walks and an error, and giving up two hits in the 9th.  With the score 6 to 4 in the bottom of the 9th, the Thunder started the inning with 2 walks and a hit batter. Once Koogler got hit by the pitch (HBP 5x in 6 games), we knew our game was back on! Drew York scored on a pass ball, and the runners shifted as Greg Moss stood in the batters box.  Greg hit one back to the pitcher and David Moss tried in vain to tie it up, but the Dragons got the fielder's choice at home for the 1st out. Now with Koogs on third and Greg on first, Drew Bost singled in the tying run. John Connell came up with 2 runners on and popped up to third base for the second out, so it was up to Thunder coach, John Ramsey to drive in the game winner.  First pitch fast ball was smacked foul down the 3rd base line, John took the next pitch in the dirt for a ball.  With the count 1-1, Ramsey hits a rope single to right center to drive in the winning run...The Thunder Wins 7 to 6! And remains undefeated 6 and 0 overall (4 - 0 in division).
WP: John Ramsey (3-0)

The potent offense of the Thunder proves to be too much for the Redlegs as the Thunder wins another to bring their record to 5 - 0.  The Thunder scored early and often posting runs every inning of the game.  David Moss hit a 2 run homer (His 3rd on the year) in the bottom of the 4th to score runs 8 and 9 for the Thunder.  Meanwhile the Thunder's starting pitcher, John Ramsey held the Redlegs to one hit and two runs through 4 innings. With the Thunder leading 9 to 2 after 4, Greg Moss came in to pitch and pitched well enough to secure a win for the team through the remaining 3 innings of the game as time expired in the 7th.
Notable batters were:
David Moss, 3 for 3 with a HR, 3 runs and 5 RBIs, Drew York 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs, Greg Moss 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs, Lee Jury 3 for 6 with 3 runs, and Drew Bost 2 for 5 with a HR, and an RBI.

Amidst a cold night in Xenia at AIA, the Thunder prevailed against the Shockers in a long cold game 11 runs to 7.  James Hammock started on the mound for the Thunder and pitched well  through 3 no hit innings before giving up a hit the fourth inning with only 3 runs scoring in the first 4 innings by the Shockers.  The fifth inning proved to be too much as James hit his second batter and issued his 7th walk.  With the score 5 to 3, David Moss came into the game and got the last 2 outs of the 5th inning.  Moss went on to pitch well through the remaining 4 innings striking out a total of 8 and giving up only four more runs while the Thunder offense produced 6 more runs to bring the final score to 11 to 7.  No one batter in particular contributed solely to the Thunder offense as a team effort ensued.  Only five hits were recorded for the night, but many took advantage of the Shocker's defensive woes and reached on walks and errors. Those who got hits were Lee Jury(scored 4 times), James Hammock, Andrew Verrett, David Moss(1 RBI), and John Ramsey (2 RBIs).

Kettering Royals in 7 innings under the run rule 17 to 5. The Thunder’s offense quickly took advantage of a series of Royal’s errors early in the game putting 14 runs on the board in the first three innings while batting through the order in the first and third innings. Meanwhile, the Thunder’s starting pitcher, John Ramsey, kept the Royal’s offense at bay with a no hitter through 4 innings to make it 14 to 1 after 4. The Royal’s bats came to life briefly in the fifth inning as Ramsey tired and began to miss his spots. The Thunder’s bats seemed to tire out as well, the last 2 scoreless innings, but fortunately, Thunder pitcher, Greg Moss did an great job of shutting the Royals down for 2 innings giving up only 2 hits and a walk until the 7th inning run rule took effect.
