Congratulations Michael!
Michael Wigglesworth was selected as the recipient of the American Legion Award for Grace Miller Elementary School fifth grade boys.  Michael demonstrated outstanding character, citizenship, and academic qualities that made him very deserving of this honor.

Way to go Michael!

Congratulations Tyler S.
Tyler Shaffer placed second in the entire county in the third grade WordMasters competition.
Unlike other language-arts contests, which emphasize grammar and punctuation, WordMasters addresses higher-level word-comprehension and logical abilities and helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.

Great job Tyler (unfortunately, I don't know the meaning to half the words he uses now.)

Congratulations TJ!
Congratulations to Tyler Johnson for receiving one of two American Legion Awards at P.B. Smith Elementary School for 2008.  The American Legion Award is very prestigious and is only awarded to one fifth grade boy and one fifth grade girl at each Fauquier County elementary school.  Recipients of this award have displayed exemplary character, citizenship and academic achievement.

Way to go TJ, you not only excel on the ballfield...but in our community as well!

Walmart Gives Back to the Mustangs

The Warrenton Walmart, and the Walmart Corporation, generously donated $1000.00 to the Fauquier Mustangs in the form of a community grant.  Walmart awards these grants to worthy organizations who are making a positive impact on their communities.

A special thank you to Andrea Johnson for informing us of this program and getting the balls rolling....and a very special thank you to Walmart for their generosity in helping out the Fauquier Mustangs.

Yardsale a Success!!
In what was perhaps the most nerve-wracking of all fundraisers, given the weather forecasts, the Mustangs made over $600.00 during our team yardsale.  Thank you to Andrea Doyle for her organization and perseverence by staring down the threat of a dismal forecast to hold the yardsale.

Looks Like We Made It!
Top Notch Service

The Mustangs Spaghetti Dinner was a huge success, netting nearly $2500.00 for the team.  This total pushed us over the top in terms of funds needed to get to Cooperstown.

This dinner would not have been possible without the efforts of everyone involved.  This team is fortunate to have such dedicated and hardworking families who pull together and get 'er done.

This dinner would not have been nearly as successful without the help of many area businesses.  We were fortunate to get such generous donations of products and gift cards.  Those merchants that assisted us were:

Quote of the Week
You only have a few years to play this game and you can't play it if you're all tied up in knots." - Willie Stargell

Super Sunday for the Mustangs
"The Mustangs Score Big on Super Sunday!"

The Fauquier Mustangs enjoyed a Super Sunday of their own this past weekend.  Conducting a multi-location Krispy Kreme Donut Sale, the Mustangs sold 200 dozen donuts and raised over $1000.00 to help offset the cost of the planned Cooperstown Dreams Tournament in June.  Thanks to all the families who participated and to Coach Alvarez for making the early morning trek to Fredericksburg to get the donuts.

First January Donut Sale A Huge Success
"Would You Like to Make a Donation to the Fauquier Mustangs or Buy a Box of Donuts?"

The Fauquier Mustangs started off their 2008 fundraising with a bang this past Sunday at the Giant in Warrenton.  Several Mustangs families braved the cold and sold 100 dozen Krispy Kreme donuts.  Donations were also collected from many generous supporters.

In the end, the Mustangs cleared $533.00 (after the $275.00 cost for the donuts)...that is some serious selling.  Good work boys.  Thanks to Andrea Doyle for heading to Fredericksburg at the crack of dawn to get the donuts, and thanks to all the families that participated.

Cookie Sale Nets $1205.00 for the Mustangs
The fall cookie sale concluded last week and earned $1205.00 for the team.  While this is an impressive number, it is less than half of what was anticipated for this fundraiser.  With the next installment for Cooperstown due in March 2008, it is imperative that everyone work hard to contribute toward this goal.  The more successful we are at fundraising, the less likely families will have chip in towards this cost.

We will be scheduling several small fundraisers (such as donut sales) in the coming months (weather permitting) and working on a large event (or two) as well.  If you have any ideas for fundraisers, or come across any sponsorship opportunities please pass those along to Diane Wigglesworth or Coach Croson as soon as possible.

Tyler Shaffer Repeats as Top Salesman
Tyler Shaffer worked hard to hold onto his crown as top cookie salesman in 2007.  After capturing the prize during the spring cookie sale, Tyler was determined to not let it slip through his hands in the fall.  Braving the sleet and snow on the last night of the sale, Tyler reached his self-imposed goal of 100 items sold.  Congratulations Tyler!!

Rounding out the top three salesmen were Jason Alvarez and Michael Wigglesworth.  These three salesmen combined to sell 160 of the total 221 items sold.  Good work guys!!

This is How You Play the Game
Below are excerpts from Ryne Sandberg (2B - Chicago Cubs) Hall of Fame induction speech from a few years ago.  In this speech he talked about playing the game for the right reasons and respecting the game.  These excerpts are good for any player to read.  The full speech (text and video), can be found here:  Ryne Sandberg Hall of Fame Speech.

Excerpts:

"The reason I am here, they tell me, is that I played the game a certain way, that I played the game the way it was supposed to be played. I don’t know about that, but I do know this: I had too much respect for the game to play it any other way, and if there was there was a single reason I am here today, it is because of one word, "respect."¹ I love to play baseball. I’m a baseball player. I’ve always been a baseball player. I’m still a baseball player. That’s who I am.

Everything I am today, everything I have today, everything I will ever be is because of the game of baseball, not the game you see on TV or in movies, baseball, the one we all know, the one we played with whiffle ball bats pretending to be Yaz or Fisk or Rose, in dirt fields and in allies. We all know that game. The game fit me because it was right -- It was all about doing things right. If you played the game the right way, played the game for the team, good things would happen. That’s what I loved most about the game, how a ground out to second with a man on second and nobody out was a great thing.

Respect.

I was taught you never, ever disrespect your opponent or your teammates or your organization or your manager and never, ever your uniform. Make a great play -- act like you’ve done it before. Get a big hit -- look for the third base coach and -- and -- and get ready to run the bases. Hit a home run -- put your head down, drop the bat, run around the bases, because the name on the front is more -- a lot more important than the name on the back.

That’s respect.

My managers like Don Zimmer and Jim Frey, they always said I made things easy on them by showing up on time, never getting into trouble, being ready to play every day, leading by example, being unselfish. I made things easy on them? These things they talk about, playing every day, that was my job. I had too much respect for them and for the game to let them down. I was afraid to let them down. I didn’t want to let them down or let the fans down or my teammates or my family or myself. I had too much respect for them to let them down.

A lot of people say this honor validates my career, but I didn’t work hard for validation. I didn’t play the game right because I saw a reward at the end of the tunnel. I played it right because that’s what you’re supposed to do -- play it right and with respect. If this validates anything, it’s that learning how to bunt and hit and run and turning two is more important than knowing where to find the little red light at the dug out camera.

Sure I worked hard to get [the] most out of my God-given ability, but that’s what we all did back then. That’s what every one of these guys sitting here did. There were a lot of players who worked just as hard as I did and if you didn’t, you didn’t stay in the big leagues.

There was Shawon Dunston and Mark Grace, and together we were a double play combination for ten years. Shawon Dunston, who knew three weeks in advance if we were facing Nolan Ryan and always had a hamstring pull planned for the day before. Mark Grace, who made sure Shawon knew he was supposed to get every popup from foul line to foul line on the infield. We could read each other’s minds on the field and off. They worked hard. How could I let them down? By not being prepared for everything that might happen in the field, at the plate, or on the bases?

Respect.

I believe it is because I had so much respect for the game and respect for getting the most out of my ability that I stand here today. I hope others in the future will know this feeling for the same reason: Respect for the game of baseball. When we all played it, it was mandatory. It’s something I hope we will one day see again."
